Free Christmas lights and holiday events for kids in the Bay Area

The Bay Area’s free holiday season for kids starts in late November and runs to New Year’s Day. The longest-running free event is San José’s Christmas in the Park, open every day from November 27 to January 1. Around it are free city tree lightings, mostly on Friday evenings in late November and early December. These are the ones whose organizers have posted 2026 dates, plus a live list of library and community holiday events for the next 60 days.

Christmas in the Park, San José

Christmas in the Park fills Plaza de César Chávez in downtown San José with decorated trees and displays. Admission is free, and donations are welcome.

  • Dates: November 27, 2026 to January 1, 2027, open daily from noon to 10 pm, including Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
  • Where: Plaza de César Chávez, on Market Street between San Fernando and San Carlos streets.
  • Opening Night Ceremony: Saturday, November 28, 6 to 7 pm, with the community tree lighting (events).
  • Free photos with Santa: every night from November 28 to December 24.
  • Special Inclusion Sundays: December 13 and December 27, 9 am to 2 pm, sensory-friendly hours for children and adults with special needs.

It’s open every day, so if you’d rather skip the opening crowds, a weeknight is an option. The site has a directions and parking page. Check it before you drive downtown.

Free tree lightings with set 2026 dates

City tree lightings are short, free and easy with kids: some music, cocoa, a countdown and the lights going on. These are confirmed on the organizers’ own pages.

Walnut Creek: Friday, November 20

The Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony is 5:30 to 6:30 pm in Civic Park, 1375 Civic Drive. It’s free and open to the public, with complimentary hot cocoa, live carolers, a meet and greet with Frosty the Snowman, and the tree lit at sunset.

Oakland: Saturday, November 28

Joy to the Town brings a holiday market to Jack London Square from 1 to 8 pm. Visit Oakland calls it free and family-friendly, with a Kids Zone, live performances from 1 to 5:30 pm and photos with Mrs. Daisy Claus. The Jack London Square Holiday Tree Lighting runs alongside it from 5:45 pm.

Palo Alto: Friday, December 4

The Holiday Tree Lighting at Lytton Plaza is free, 5:30 to 7 pm, at 200 University Avenue (corner of Emerson Street). The city lists live music from local groups, including the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra, plus winter treats.

Cupertino: Friday, December 4

Cupertino’s tree lighting is 6 to 8 pm at the Quinlan Community Center, 10185 North Stelling Road. It’s free, with no registration. The city lists a photo with Santa, a snowball room, a holiday movie and kids’ activities.

Palo Alto and Cupertino are on the same evening, so pick the one closer to home. Each city’s page has the full program.

Holiday lights and library events

Not every free holiday event is a big ceremony. Libraries hold holiday storytimes, ornament and card crafts, and sometimes a visit from Santa. Community centers and downtown associations add winter festivals and light walks. These are the events in the live list below. It reads the official calendars of libraries, cities and parks across the Bay Area and keeps the free ones for kids.

For neighborhood light displays, the list catches events with “lights” in their title. Our city Christmas pages add curated holiday listings for San José, San Francisco, Oakland, Fremont, Walnut Creek, San Mateo and San Rafael.

Dates we’re still waiting for

Some well-known free events hadn’t posted full 2026 details when we checked. We’ll add them once the organizers do:

  • San Rafael: the downtown business district lists the Holiday of Lights and Winter Wonderland for Saturday, December 5, 2026, but times and the program aren’t posted yet (Downtown San Rafael).
  • Milpitas: the city’s tree lighting page still shows last year’s details (City of Milpitas).

Tips for holiday events with kids

  • Go early for tree lightings. They’re short, and the best spots near the tree fill up. Arriving 20 to 30 minutes before the start is usually enough.
  • Think about a weeknight for Santa. Weekends close to Christmas tend to be busier.
  • Dress warm. Most of these are outdoors after dark.
  • Check the day before. Rain can change outdoor plans, and the organizer’s page is the final word.

Nil, who started this site, is a Bay Area dad of three. Every weekend he worried about what to do with the kids that was fun, close and free, and the answers were spread over dozens of calendars, so he built this site to put them in one place. The live list below shows free holiday events for kids for the next 60 days. See also our Christmas page and free kids events in San José, Oakland, Palo Alto and Cupertino.
