Free Christmas lights in Austin in 2026

For free Christmas lights in Austin, choose general admission to the Austin Trail of Lights on December 10–11 or December 13–17. The organizer confirms those 2026 dates are free for all ages, with no advance admission ticket needed. Entry starts at 7 pm. Parking costs extra, so decide how you will get to Zilker Park before putting a night on your calendar.
Choose a free Trail of Lights night
The Trail of Lights ticket page separates free general admission from paid evenings and premium passes. For a family trying to keep admission free, the date matters: December 12 and December 18–23 are paid general-admission nights. Children aged eleven and younger enter free with a ticketed adult on those nights, but that does not make the whole family’s visit free.
General admission includes Santa photos. The ticket page does not promise a particular waiting time or a photo appointment, so leave room in your evening if seeing Santa is your child’s main reason for going. You can also skip the photo stop and spend the outing looking at the displays.
ZIP and Platinum passes are optional paid products. Their earlier entry and other extras are separate from free general admission. Read the admission label before buying anything; you do not need to buy an upgrade simply because the event also sells one.
Plan the trip before bedtime does it for you
The organizer’s 2026 event FAQs put general-admission hours at 7–10 pm. A 7 pm start may be late for a toddler. Consider whether your child will enjoy an evening walk after the trip there, and agree on a leaving time before setting off.
Close-in parking requires an advance purchase, including on free-entry nights, and is not sold on arrival. Follow the directions supplied with the parking pass. For a visit without a parking purchase, compare walking, cycling and public transport from your starting point. The FAQs list bus options, while bikes and scooters must stay outside the trail.
Check the FAQs again shortly before your visit for road closures and access changes. Take layers and shoes for outdoor walking. Choose a meeting point in case your group separates, and keep the organizer’s page handy for last-minute updates.
The Zilker Holiday Tree starts in November
The city’s Zilker Holiday Tree schedule lists its 2026 lighting ceremony for Sunday, November 29. Music starts at 5:15 pm and the ceremony at 6 pm, at Zilker Park, 2100 Barton Springs Road, on the south side of the park. The city lists free parking for that ceremony, with spaces available in arrival order.
The published tree season runs from November 29 to January 1, with viewing hours of 6–10 pm. Tree visits and Trail of Lights admission have separate arrangements. The city’s drive-up directions do not apply on Trail of Lights event nights, so use the instructions for your chosen date.
For a parent choosing between them, the tree ceremony offers an earlier start than the trail’s general admission. Check the city announcement again before leaving, especially if rain changes your plans. Do not assume the ceremony’s free parking arrangements apply throughout the holiday season.
Check the year on other Austin lights pages
UT Austin’s Longhorn Lights page still shows a banner for November 18, 2025 through January 1, 2026. That describes the previous season. The 2026 holiday-season dates are not announced there yet, so we have not carried the old schedule into this year’s plans.
Mozart’s Festival of Lights lists paid general admission for its 2026 season. We have left it out of the free outings above. Check the organizer’s current admission rules if you find an older recommendation calling it free.
For an outing before the lights begin, browse free kids events in Austin, Round Rock or Cedar Park. Open the activity’s organizer link to check ages and registration before you go.
