Free Thanksgiving activities for kids in the Bay Area

Thanksgiving is on Thursday, November 26, 2026 (sf.gov). Most of the free Thanksgiving activities for kids in the Bay Area happen at public libraries in the week or two before: turkey crafts, gratitude projects and harvest storytimes. Then, the weekend after Thanksgiving, free holiday events start. San José’s Christmas in the Park and Oakland’s Jack London Square tree lighting both open that weekend.

Thanksgiving crafts and storytimes at the library

Libraries post most of their Thanksgiving programs in November, so the list grows through the month. Typical events are:

  • Craft tables: handprint turkeys, paper leaf garlands, place cards for the family table.
  • Gratitude projects: a “thankful tree” where kids add a paper leaf, or a card for someone they love.
  • Harvest and fall storytimes: picture books, songs and a simple craft, usually for babies through preschoolers.
  • Native American Heritage Month: November events about the people whose land the Bay Area is on. These are a good way to add more of the story to a classroom version of Thanksgiving.

Many library programs are free and drop-in. Some hand out a limited number of tickets or craft kits shortly before the start, so getting there 10 to 15 minutes early is a good habit. The live list below shows these events across the Bay Area as libraries post them.

Check your library’s holiday hours

Many libraries close on Thanksgiving Day, and some also close the day after or longer. Two examples from this year’s official schedules:

  • Berkeley Public Library: all locations close at 6 pm on Wednesday, November 25, and are closed Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27 (schedule).
  • Hayward Public Library: both branches are closed Monday, November 23 through Saturday, November 28, and regular hours return Tuesday, December 1. The digital library stays open (notice).

Other library systems set their own hours, so check your branch’s page before you plan a visit that week.

The week before: an early tree lighting

If you want a free holiday outing before the turkey, Walnut Creek’s Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony is on Friday, November 20, 2026, 5:30 to 6:30 pm, in Civic Park (1375 Civic Drive). It’s free and open to the public. The listing mentions hot cocoa, carolers, a meet and greet with Frosty the Snowman, and lighting the tree at sunset.

The weekend after Thanksgiving: free holiday kickoffs

The long weekend is when the bigger free holiday events open.

  • Christmas in the Park, San José. The downtown holiday park in Plaza de César Chávez opens the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, November 27. It’s open daily from noon to 10 pm through January 1, 2027, and admission is free (Christmas in the Park). The Opening Night Ceremony is Saturday, November 28, 6 to 7 pm, and free photos with Santa run every night from November 28 to December 24 (events).
  • Joy to the Town, Oakland. The holiday market at Jack London Square is on Saturday, November 28, 1 to 8 pm. Visit Oakland calls it a free, family-friendly event, with a Kids Zone, live performances and photos with Mrs. Daisy Claus. The Jack London Square tree lighting runs alongside it from 5:45 pm (Visit Oakland).

For more holiday events through December, see our guide to free Christmas lights and holiday events and the Christmas page.

Simple free things to do at home over the long weekend

Not everything has to be an outing. A few ideas that cost nothing:

  • Borrow a stack of Thanksgiving and fall books before the library closes, so you have something new for the days it’s shut.
  • Make a gratitude chain. Each person writes one thing they’re thankful for on a paper strip each day of the long weekend.
  • Let kids help cook. Washing vegetables, stirring and setting the table all count, and it keeps little hands busy while the adults cook.
  • Take a leaf walk. Collect fall leaves in your neighborhood or local park and press them in a heavy book for a craft later.

Tips for Thanksgiving week

  • Look at the list early in the month. Craft programs before the holiday often have limited supplies.
  • Bring the whole family. Grandparents in town are usually welcome at drop-in library programs. Check the listing for age guidance.
  • Plan around closures. The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is often an early-closing day.
  • Confirm before you go. Organizers sometimes change times. Each event in the list below links to its organizer’s own page.
